The UN Security Council has praised UN Special Envoy Grundberg’s latest recommendation for a two-month cease-fire in Yemen.

The members of the Security Council issued a statement urging all parties to take advantage of the truce to make progress toward a complete ceasefire and an inclusive political solution.

They praised the Gulf Cooperation Council’s proposal for a Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue, which was launched last week in support of UN operations in Yemen.

After a dramatic escalation in the violent fight between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi rebels, an agreement has been reached.

According to the UN envoy to Yemen, the warring parties have agreed to a two-month cease-fire beginning with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, expressed confidence that the cease-fire would open the road for peace, but cautioned, “We know that these accords are always fragile.”
