Eid, like most Islamic celebrations, has no set date and shifts every year according to the lunar cycle. The start of Eid is determined by Muslims based on the new beginning of a new moon cycle following the commencement of Ramadan.

As a result, determining the exact start of Eid can be challenging. While the majority of experts agree that Eid will begin on Monday, May 2 this year, others believe it will occur on May 3.

Eid is commemorated by a highly distinctive sort of prayer that is often performed in a large hall or a field – for example, Platt Fields park regularly holds services – due to its importance and unique nature as a holiday. Eid prayers are particularly special in that they are one of the few prayers that must be said in a congregation, emphasizing the importance of the Islamic community uniting to rejoice.

Eid prayers traditionally begin at sunset on the night the crescent moon is first seen, however many mosques perform Eid prayers the next morning. Muslims will visit their family and friends after the prayers to wish them a merry Eid and often exchange presents or sweets.

Eid is also a unique holiday since it is traditionally regarded as one of only two days set aside by Allah (God) for celebration, the other being Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son at Allah’s command.
