Former cop in West Yorkshire jailed over stealing more than £12,000

A former West Yorkshire Police officer sentenced to prison for stealing more than £12,000 in seized cash will be asked to repay only £1 of his ill-gotten profits.

Sean Donoghue, a 54-year-old detective constable with Protective Services Crime, previously pled guilty to one count of misconduct in a public office.

When he appeared at Leeds Crown Court in November last year, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Donoghue was apprehended in April 2019 after multiple open police exhibit bags were discovered at his former residence. The bags had previously held cash.

An investigation into seized cash handled by Donoghue was conducted, and it was discovered that a number of exhibits had been recorded as’returned to owner.’

These owners were contacted and confirmed that this was not the case.

Banking inquiries also revealed a number of instances where Donoghue made cash deposits soon after taking cash exhibits from the property shop.

Donoghue was considered to have taken at least £12,592 at the time of his imprisonment.

However, at a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing on Friday, the court was informed that the appointed financial investigator now believed the sum to be little more than £16,000.

Donoghue had no finances to his name as a result of the family courts issuing a matrimonial order for money owing, and the investigation had revealed no concealed assets, according to the court.

Mr. Recorder Ben Nolan QC, the judge, ordered that a nominal sum of £1 be paid in the absence of finances.

In response to Donoghue, he stated: “I doubt you’ll be complaining about it. Everyone except you, I might say, is relieved that you have nothing stashed up.”

Prior to Donoghue’s conviction, West Yorkshire Police conducted a gross misconduct investigation into another issue in which he was involved.

It resulted in him being dismissed from the force without notice and prevented him from working for any police force in England and Wales.
