According to a People Before Profit spokesman, Hannah Kenny was exposed to sectarian and sexist abuse in east Belfast. On Saturday, April 23, three males grabbed her arm and throat in an estate. A lady was verbally insulted and intimidated while handing out election materials, according to police.

“The report contained charges of physical and verbal abuse, as well as sectarian and sexist remarks,” a police official stated.

Ms. Kenny stated that she was “very concerned” by the degree of hostility directed at her for “just presenting electoral literature.”

“The fact that these individuals told me I had been recognized from election campaign posters in the vicinity before assaulting me was very troubling,” she added in a statement.

“Unfortunately, there is a minority-focused on polarizing this election along similar lines; other election candidates have been assaulted and intimidated, and posters have been defaced in numerous locations.”

“These aren’t just assaults on individuals like me; they’re attacks on the democratic process, and they’re meant to set us back.”

According to the party, the assailants allegedly threatened her with harm if she returned to the neighborhood.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland is dedicated to doing everything we can to ensure that all candidates may engage fully in the next Northern Ireland Assembly election free from harassment, intimidation, and other kinds of crime,” said Ch Insp Mark Roberts.

“We have contacted political parties to give briefing sessions and information on crime prevention and personal safety to candidates, and our officers will continue to offer assistance and advise at the local level.” Ms. Kenny is a candidate for the Belfast East seat.
