Despite financial difficulties and spending claims, the National Rifle Association said on Monday that the board of directors has re-elected Wayne LaPierre as CEO and executive vice president.

Lt. Col. Allen West had challenged LaPierre. However, the group said that West garnered only one vote – and that the vote was preceded by a resolution pledging support for LaPierre’s past, present, and future.

The re-election comes at a time when the gun rights advocacy group has been under attack from gun control advocates in the aftermath of the tragic shootings in Uvalde.

We mourn for the people of Uvalde and Texas, as do all Americans. As we do so, we join the appeal to support courageous law enforcement officers like Deputy Thoman, enhance mental health services, and make our schools safer and more secure.

LaPierre stated that I am thrilled to continue working for the NRA and to join our members in their efforts to promote responsible gun ownership and preserve Second Amendment rights for all law-abiding Americans.

In recent years, the NRA has been shaken by controversy and financial difficulties. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit to dissolve the group, alleging that millions of dollars were siphoned for personal vacations by LaPierre and others, as well. Although that case was unsuccessful, a separate one to remove LaPierre and other top executives is still ongoing.

The organization filed for bankruptcy in 2021, but it was denied by a judge. According to the Associated Press, the group has now laid off thousands of people and drastically reduced its expenditures, including on political candidates.

There are clearly some things we can and must do. What we can and should do to prevent the hate-filled, ugly creatures who walk among us from perpetrating evil.”
