Two attempted attacks on infrastructure in the regional capital Tiraspol, according to authorities in Moldova’s Moscow-backed breakaway province of Transnistria.

The attacks follow a succession of attacks in the separatist territory, raising concerns about spillover from the crisis in neighboring Ukraine.

“At around 4:15 a.m., a car stopped near one enterprise’s oil depot, from which an unidentified guy got out, tossed a Molotov cocktail at the structure, and escaped,” the self-proclaimed republic’s interior ministry said in a statement.

Some grass caught fire, but it was “immediately” extinguished, according to the report.

“Two Molotov cocktails were thrown” at a conscription office in central Tiraspol 30 minutes later.

“One bounced off onto the sidewalk, the other got stuck in window grates. The fire was promptly extinguished by security,” the ministry said.

Transnistria, a self-proclaimed country bordering Ukraine, broke away from Moldova in 1992 after a brief war with Chisinau. Since then, some 1,500 Russian military have been stationed there.

Fears of a spillover from the Ukraine conflict intensified after a Russian commander stated that the Kremlin’s military effort, which began on February 24, sought to establish a land corridor through southern Ukraine to Transnistria.

Ukraine has charged Russia with attempting to destabilize the region in order to justify military participation. In Moldova’s breakaway territory, an oil storage and a military office were targeted.
