A judge has decided that a pair of Iowa teens accused of killing their high school Spanish teacher will be prosecuted as adults when their case is heard in November.
Willard Miller, 16, of Fairfield, Iowa, will be prosecuted as an adult in November on a first-degree murder charge in the beating death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber, a Fairfield High School teacher, District Judge Shawn Showers said Thursday. Miller’s suspected accomplice, 17-year-old Jeremy Goodale, learned on Wednesday that he, too, would face adult charges.
During Miller’s court appearance on Thursday, the judge stated that the juvenile justice system would not have enough time to rehabilitate Miller “for a crime of such enormity.” If Miller had been found guilty, the juvenile system could not have detained him for more than six months after his 19th birthday.
Miller and Goodale were both 16 years old when they were arrested for Graber’s murder. Graber’s body was discovered Nov. 3 in a Fairfield city park, concealed behind a tarp, a wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. According to police, she was battered to death with a baseball bat.
According to previous court filings, the couple surveilled Graber’s routine of life, attacked her on her regular stroll, and carried her into the woods, returning later to better cover her deceased corpse.
Graber, 66, went missing on November 2 and her remains were discovered later that day in a park. Authorities previously acknowledged she had suffered “inflicted head damage.”
Fairfield is located around 95 miles southeast of Des Moines.
