Synopsis
According to a state senator, this week's massacre is ultimately the result of an American gun crisis.
While there were definitely huge failings in the law enforcement response to this week’s school massacre, Roland Gutierrez, the Texas state senator who represents the community of Uvalde, has stated that the culpability for what happened is shared far more widely.
On Sunday, Mr. Gutierrez, a Democrat, spoke with Dana Bash, host of CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“I had a long talk with Colonel McCraw yesterday,” said the senator, referring to the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety. “He’s devastated… he’s acknowledged that there were errors here. What I’ve suggested is that it’s not fair to put it on the local ISD cop.
At the end of the day, everybody failed here. We failed these children. We even failed them in the Texas legislature.”
The initial astonishment over the police response to the shooting has given way to outrage in recent days, as evidence continues to emerge that officers received repeated 911 calls from children and teachers while the atrocity was taking place, yet did not enter the school building for 50 minutes. Early police accounts regarding the sequence of events during the massacre proved incorrect and contradictory, heightening resentment over the failure to stop Salvador Ramos as he slaughtered 19 children and two adults. Since the shooting, Mr. Roland Gutierrez has given numerous interviews. He also appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this morning, where host Chuck Todd questioned him if anyone should be held accountable for the law police reaction during the massacre.
