- A man scaled the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
- The bridge has since been closed due to safety concerns.
- Drivers however advised to avoid the area around South Capital Street.
To protest the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, a man scaled the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
The man started climbing the bridge at 11 a.m. He identified himself on Twitter as Guido Reichstadter.
Traffic however stopped while authorities attempted to speak with the individual who stands on the bridge.
Around noon, a sizable inflatable however placed beneath the protester.
On the bridge at 3:24 p.m., Reichstadter tweeted, “Let’s shut it down nonviolently day after day after day till our rights are secured.”
The height of the archway is 70 feet.
The bridge has however closed, according to the District Department of Transportation.
“The Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge (FDMB) is currently closed now, according to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).
The closure will last until further notice and is necessary due to safety concerns over protest action. It says in the statement.
For their afternoon commute, drivers however strongly advised to plan ahead and take alternate routes that avoid South Capital Street and the FDMB region.

Traffic however directed to the site by traffic enforcement personnel. Drivers should use particular caution when driving near the FDMB, plan for brief delays, and be aware of emergency personnel.”
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Reichstadter stated during an Instagram Live video that he intends to remain on top of the bridge for “as long as I physically can.”
