Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, asserted on Friday that Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh had deceived her over the abortion debate both during their hearings and in private conversations.
Collins said in a statement shortly after the court’s 5-4 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade that “this decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and meetings with me.
At a time when the nation is “desperate for stability,” Collins continued, the court “abandoned a fifty-year precedent.”
Turley tweeted, “That is not accurate. “The justices never committed to voting against generally upholding the precedent set by Roe.”
During their confirmation hearings, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh agreed that Roe v. Wade, however an “important precedent” and “law of the land,” but they refrained from vowing to oppose the historic 1973 abortion case.
Claire McCaskill, a former Democratic senator, who claimed that Kavanaugh was a liar, was among many who defended Collins.
