LAHORE: At least 612 suspected criminals were killed during police encounters in Punjab during the last five years, BOL News reported.

Bol News has obtained a copy of the official documents regarding the police encounters between 2018-2022, number of suspects killed, and policemen who lost their lives.

The figures revealed that 612 suspects were killed in police encounters in Punjab from January 1, 2018, to September 15, 2022.

The reports also disclosed that 57 police officers sacrificed their lives in police encounters during the five-year period.

According to the report, 67 suspects were killed in police encounters in 2018; 69 accused were killed in 2019; while 166 were killed in 2020.

In 2021, 186 accused were killed in police encounters, while similarly, 124 accused were killed in police encounters till September 2022.

The figures also revealed that seven policemen lost their lives in 2018; while 18 policemen were killed in 2019, and nine others were killed in 2020.

In 2021, fourteen policemen lost their lives in encounters, while another nine were martyred till September 2022.

A total of 544 cases related to police encounters were registered across Punjab during five years.

In 2018, there were 58 First Information Reports (FIRs) registered regarding encounters, while in 2019 there were 72 cases were registered.

The number of cases regarding encounters increased in 2020 when 141 FIRs were registered. In 2021, there were 160 cases registered against encounters. There will 113 cases registered until September 2022.
