The second wave of casting has just been revealed for Ava DuVernay’s planned film adaptation of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent. Recently joining the project in roles that are still to be determined are Niecy Nash-Betts, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Nick Offerman, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Connie Nielsen. They join Aunjanue Ellis, who was previously announced.

Caste, which is based on Isabel Wilkerson’s book, provides a thorough examination of the hidden caste system in America that is influenced by racial, socioeconomic, and other aspects. In the book, Wilkerson focuses on eight pillars that characterize the systems and compares them to those in America, India, and Nazi Germany. She connects multiple histories by providing studied viewpoints from both notable historical figures and common people. She hopes to demonstrate how “America may move beyond the artificial and harmful separations of human differences, toward optimism in our common humanity” in the end.

Bernthal’s most recent role before the movie was in the Showtime series American Gigolo, a contemporary remake of the 1980 movie. Among his other endeavors are The Walking Dead and The Punisher. His King Richard co-star Ellis and The Many Saints of Newark co-star Farmiga are also present in Caste. Continuing from the previous reunion, DuVernay and Farmiga previously collaborated on Colin in Black and White and When They See Us, respectively. A well-known personality in the horror genre, Farmiga has been in movies like Orphan and The Conjuring as well as TV episodes like Bates Motel. Offerman will star in HBO’s The Last of Us and currently has a series regular role on FOX’s The Great North.

Nash has had a successful few years in her career, having recurring parts in the TV series Claws and Reno 911!, both of which ended in 2022. She captured the public’s attention in Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story late last year in her role as Glenda Cleveland. She is now the showrunner of The Rookie: Feds on ABC. Jones is most recognized for playing both Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Broadway production of Hamilton. She also starred in Mrs. Fletcher, and this year marks the return of the show Blindspotting with Season 2. For her roles as Queen Hippolyta in DC’s Wonder Woman and Justice League, Nielsen is well-known. Nobody and Drimmeren are two of her most recent endeavors.

DuVernay, famed for works like 13th, When They See Us, Queen Sugar, and others, wrote and directed Caste. She co-produces with Paul Garnes of ARRAY Filmworks. Georgia is presently the location of production, but it will eventually shift to Germany and India. There will be multiple stories in the movie.
