Misha Green, the creator of Lovecraft Country, and Jurnee Smollett will collaborate once more on Green’s feature directorial debut, Sunflower. The film will follow two women as they struggle to escape the isolated sunflower field where they have been held captive by a disturbed college professor.

The sunflower was the first story I sold when I arrived in Hollywood and getting the chance to turn it into my first feature directorial effort feels like kismet, according to Green. The script is praised by Nathan Kahane, president of Lionsgate, as being “original, intriguing, and downright scary,” adding that “it’s going to create a hell of a movie.”

Before transitioning to adult parts in The Great Debaters, Hands of Stone, the TV shows True Blood and Friday Night Lights, Smollett began her acting career as a child performer, making appearances in the sitcoms Full House and On Our Own, as well as the Robin Williams comedy Jack. She received praise for her work in Lovecraft Country, for which she was nominated for an Emmy, and developed a fan base for the role of the superhero Black Canary in Warner Bros. ‘Birds of Prey. She will soon be featured in the Amazon courtroom drama The Burial with Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones.

When WGN’s popular antebellum drama underground was canceled after two seasons, Green, a writer for Sons of Anarchy, Spartacus, and Heroes, launched her own series. She then adapted the Matt Ruff horror novel Lovecraft Country for HBO. The ninth episode of the series, which she also directed, received critical acclaim and garnered her an Emmy nomination for her writing. However, HBO decided not to renew the show for a second season.

Smollett appeared in both Underground and Lovecraft Country, and Green was slated to work with her once more on a Black Canary movie for Warner Bros., although it’s unknown how that project is doing now. She was also slated to helm the 2018 Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider movie’s follow-up, but that project was abandoned after MGM lost control of the franchise. The Mother, an action thriller starring Jennifer Lopez and written and produced by The Green, will be available on Netflix in May.

Green and Craig Flores, who recently produced the sleeper hit thriller Crawl, will produce Sunflower. For Lionsgate, Meredith Wieck and Aaron Edmonds will be in charge of the project.
