Meesha Shafi, a singer and composer, has revealed, in a shocking turn of events, that she made a false statement when testifying in a defamation case brought by her bandmate Ali Zafar.

Meesha had accused the Teefa in Trouble actor of sexual harassment back in 2018, and Ali Zafar angrily refuted her claims. Ali Zafar subsequently sued Shafi for defamation.

Zafar’s attorney, Advocate Tariq Gul, questioned Shafi about the sexual harassment evidence she had presented in court during a recent hearing on Thursday at a Lahore sessions court.

The contested piece of evidence was a picture of Shafi and Zafar taken at Ayesha Fazli’s birthday celebration and posted by the latter herself to Facebook with the statement, “Tonight we party.”

Gul contended that because Meesha Shafi placed the image online, it could not be used as proof of sexual harassment.

He further questioned Shafi’s assertion that she had never received a summons from the court, saying that she had “deliberately misrepresented” the document.

Meesha Shafi responded by saying that her remark regarding the court summons was a “slip of the tongue.” She also acknowledged that the picture she had provided as proof did not accurately represent sexual harassment.

Ambreen Qureshi, a barrister, posted the court documents on Twitter.

An important breakthrough in the lengthy legal dispute between the two musicians is Meesha Shafi’s admission. The defence team for Zafar has welcomed it as proof of their client’s innocence.

Shafi’s admirers, however, believe it to be overstated and accuse Ali Zafar’s team of using it as a ruse to “save face” given the criticism Ali Zafar has received for his “head-over-heels” performances for controversial Indian poet Javed Akhtar.
