In a groundbreaking move on its 117th anniversary, renowned Italian automaker Lancia has officially kicked off its Renaissance by unveiling the first teaser image of the electric version of its iconic Ypsilon model. Set to be formally revealed in Milan in February 2024, the electric Ypsilon marks Lancia’s entry into the ever-growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
The rebirth of the Lancia brand takes the form of a limited edition masterpiece, the “Edizione Limitata Cassina,” paying homage to the company’s founding date of 1906. Limited to just 1906 examples, this exclusive model is set to redefine the concept of luxury in the electric vehicle segment.
While the details of the special launch edition are being kept under wraps, Lancia has teased enthusiasts with covered full-size model images, showcasing the Ypsilon’s distinctive silhouette and hood contour, providing a glimpse of the new lighting signature.
The highlight of Lancia’s teasers is the introduction of the “tavolino,” a circular component located between the front seats. This coffee table-like addition, encased in an aluminum-style trim and leather-like upholstery, is a nod to the brand’s commitment to creating a homely atmosphere within the vehicle. Lancia emphasizes that the “tavolino” embodies the home-feeling concept, a central theme in the brand’s identity.
The collaboration with high-end furniture manufacturer Cassina, known for its partnership with Lancia on the Pu+Ra HPE concept, brings a unique touch to the Ypsilon Edizione Limitata Cassina. Luca Fuso, Cassina CEO, expressed the importance of exploring new design avenues and highlighted shared values of innovation, research, and respect for Italian manufacturing tradition.
Luca Napolitano, Lancia Brand CEO, hailed the day as the long-awaited Renaissance of the brand. He stated that the collaboration with Cassina elevates the Ypsilon to the ultimate expression of the home feeling, emphasizing attention to detail, materials, colors, and spaces. The onboard “tavolino” is a pioneering feature that aims to make every journey feel like home.
Underpinning Ypsilon’s innovative design is Stellantis technology, aligning with the broader group’s commitment to sustainability. While the Ypsilon will be available with mildly hybrid drivetrains, the “Cassina” edition will exclusively be offered in an electric vehicle configuration. This marks not only Lancia’s foray into the EV market but also signifies the transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric power, set to be completed by 2028.
The Ypsilon is poised to be a key player in Lancia’s ambitious 10-year Renaissance strategic plan. Following its debut in 2024, the model range is set to expand with the introduction of the Gamma electric crossover flagship in 2026 and the Delta electric hatchback in 2028.
In the coming weeks, Lancia promises to unveil further details of the Ypsilon, building anticipation for its grand reveal in February 2024. The electric Ypsilon, with its fusion of cutting-edge automotive technology and the comfort of home, is undoubtedly a pivotal moment in Lancia’s storied history, signaling a bright and sustainable future for the iconic brand.
