In a move welcomed by many households and businesses, Pakistan’s newly-formed government has announced the first relief in electricity bills for the month of April 2024. This relief comes under the fuel cost adjustment (FCA), providing much-needed respite to consumers.

Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Leghari, highlighted that the electricity price has been reduced by Rs3.82. He attributed this decline directly to the adjustments made in fuel costs. Specifically, the FCA for the current month has been decreased by Rs2.14, bringing it down to Rs 4.92 per unit from its previous rate of Rs 7.06 per unit.

Moreover, Leghari elaborated on the broader impact, noting that the fuel cost adjustment for the first quarter of the fiscal year had initially been set at Rs 4.43. However, this has now been lowered to Rs 2.75, resulting in a significant decrease of Rs 1.68 per unit in electricity bills across the board.

This reduction in costs means that consumers can expect lower electricity bills for the running month compared to the previous billing cycle, providing a tangible benefit to households and businesses alike.

Leghari further clarified the process by which these adjustments are made, explaining that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) establishes the ‘reference tariff’ for the entire year at the beginning of each fiscal year. Meanwhile, the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) is recalculated and determined on a monthly basis, allowing for more responsive adjustments based on current fuel costs.
