Google Chrome already includes a memory-saving feature that automatically suspends inactive tabs to conserve RAM on both mobile devices and computers.

However, Google appears to be testing a new feature called “Declutter,” which could take this functionality a step further by automatically archiving and deleting inactive tabs on the Chrome browser for Android. Although still in the experimental phase, Declutter aims to simplify tab organization and enhance user experience by facilitating easier access to frequently used tabs.

While competing browsers have similar features, Chrome’s adoption of this functionality could be particularly beneficial for smartphones, especially those with limited hardware capabilities.

The mechanism behind Declutter is straightforward: once a certain number of tabs are open, inactive tabs will be automatically archived and stored away from view, though they remain accessible through a separate menu for retrieval.

Additionally, users can opt to have Chrome automatically delete archived tabs after a specified period, further optimizing hardware performance. Given Chrome’s reputation for being resource-intensive, these enhancements should contribute to improved browser performance.

Users will also have the flexibility to customize the time frame for tab deletion according to their preferences. While the tab declutter feature offers significant advantages, there is a potential downside in the risk of inadvertently losing important tabs that were not bookmarked.

Although currently observed only for Android, there is hope that Declutter will eventually be available for the desktop version of Chrome.

However, there is no confirmed release date for Declutter as it remains an experimental feature.
