Samsung Unveils Quickest RAM for Mobile Devices
Samsung has achieved a significant milestone in mobile technology by unveiling its latest LPDDR5X RAM, setting a new speed record for smartphones. This achievement surpasses SK Hynix’s LPDDR5T, which reached speeds of 9.6 Gbps. Samsung‘s LPDDR5X RAM boasts an impressive speed of 10.7 GB/s, making it the fastest RAM available for smartphones to date.
This development marks a notable improvement from Samsung’s previous 8.5 Gbps LPDDR5X RAM, showcasing a 25% increase in performance. The new LPDDR5X standard also allows for the creation of 32-GB packages, thanks to advancements in the 12nm manufacturing process, resulting in smaller chips that can accommodate greater capacity.

Beyond speed enhancements, Samsung is targeting AI applications with this RAM, catering to the memory demands of modern generative AI models like ChatGPT. This also benefits high-powered GPUs such as Nvidia’s RTX 4090, which faces limitations due to its 24 GB of VRAM. While Nvidia offers professional cards with higher VRAM capacities, the associated costs are considerable.
The 12nm process contributes to improved power efficiency, with the new LPDDR5X chips consuming 25% less power and supporting extended low-power states. This efficiency not only benefits mobile devices reliant on battery power but also servers, where reducing electricity consumption is a significant operational concern.
Mass production of the 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X RAM is set to begin in the second half of 2024, signaling the imminent arrival of smartphones and other devices equipped with this advanced technology by year-end. Meanwhile, Samsung is already working on developing the next generation of LPDDR6 RAM, indicating a continuous drive towards further innovation in mobile memory solutions.
