KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has officially announced 1st May as a public holiday throughout the province in honor of Labour Day.
The Chief Secretary of Sindh has issued a notification declaring the public holiday for the entire province.
Following a circular from the cabinet division, all educational institutions, as well as public and private offices across Sindh, will be closed on May 1st to observe Labour Day. It is anticipated that the federal government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will also declare May 1st as a public holiday.
Labour Day, also known as May Day, was established as a national holiday in Pakistan in 1972 alongside the formulation of the country’s first labour policy. Since gaining independence in 1947, Pakistan has been a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), having ratified 36 ILO conventions, including eight core conventions.
The occasion is marked by various activities such as rallies, processions, union gatherings, seminars, and organized demonstrations in the streets. During these events, union leaders and members of civil society deliver speeches highlighting the historical significance of Labour Day, advocating for labour rights, and showing solidarity with workers globally.
