ISLAMABAD: Monsoon rains are likely to start from the next month. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, heavy and light rains are expected in different parts of the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, in the first week of the upcoming month.

Moderate to very heavy rains may increase the water flows in local nullahs, streams, and rivers causing flash flooding in vulnerable areas. The monsoon rains may trigger hill torrents in vulnerable areas of Dera Ismail Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur along with Suleman and Kirthar Ranges. Besides, there may be urban flooding in vulnerable areas across the country.

The rains may trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas of Murree, Galiyat, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In light of increased temperatures and forecasted rain spell in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the flows of rivers and streams are expected to increase and there is a higher probability of GLOF event triggering in vulnerable and at-risk valleys.

The NDMA further said that dust and wind-thunderstorms as well as heavy falls may cause damage to loose structures such as electrical poles, solar panels, hoardings, tall trees, and under-construction buildings.
