Authorities in Dubai have introduced a pilot initiative to reduce working hours for participating government entities during the summer.

This initiative, named ‘Our Flexible Summer,’ is organized by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR). It will also suspend work on Fridays.

From August 12 to September 30, employees at 15 government entities will have their work hours reduced to seven per day.

This initiative will allow employees to enjoy a longer weekend for seven weeks, enhancing workplace flexibility and safety during the summer, while ensuring a better work-life balance.

Although the DGHR has not specified which entities are participating, they conducted a survey to assess the willingness of government agencies to reduce working hours. The initiative received exceptional support, emphasizing the importance of work-life balance and employee well-being.

The DGHR aims to measure the impact of this initiative on employees and overall productivity. Studies have shown that reduced work hours can boost productivity.

For example, Sharjah, which has a three-day weekend, reported an 88% increase in productivity and a 90% rise in job satisfaction among employees, along with a 94% service satisfaction rate from customers.

The DGHR will regularly assess feedback and create a final report summarizing the initiative’s outcomes, recommendations, and adaptability to various government entities.

This initiative also aims to reduce energy consumption within government departments, contributing to a more sustainable working environment.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, director-general of the DGHR, states, “The launch will also further our vision to empower human resources by developing smart solutions and innovative policies to uplift Dubai’s competitiveness. The initiative aims to enhance employees’ quality of life and promote sustainable use of government resources, positioning Dubai as the ideal city for a superior lifestyle.”
