Internet service across Pakistan has been significantly disrupted, causing widespread inconvenience to users for several days, affecting all providers as of Monday.
Social media platforms have been especially impacted, with users experiencing difficulties in downloading audio messages. Internet service providers have blamed the issue on social media, while mobile companies deny any involvement.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not commented on the situation.
In the meantime, the government has started the process of regulating all social media platforms. Documents reveal that a rating-based regulatory framework will be implemented once approved by the federal cabinet.
Under the new regulations, companies will be required to store data within Pakistan, and license holders will need to provide location and general information when requested.
Officials suggest that ongoing work on the firewall might be contributing to the internet service disruptions, which could continue until August 30, according to sources.
