ISLAMABAD:  The Lahore High Court Bar filed a petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the power generation policy of 1994.

Lahore High Court Bar President Asad Manzoor Butt has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to declare the Power Generation Policy 1994 unconstitutional.

The petition has made the Federation, the Ministry of Water and Power and the Ministry of Energy among others parties, the petition has prayed that the Power Generation Policy of 1994 and other policies be declared unconstitutional.

The petition states that unilateral agreements with Independent Power Producers(IPPs) are non-transparent, illegal and un-Islamic.

The court should ask for all the details including the ownership of the IPPs and also the details of the IPPs that do not generate electricity in the country.

It has also been pleaded in the petition that expensive electricity is a violation of Article 18, the principle of viewing policy meters for violation of fundamental rights has been laid down in several court decisions.

The petition further states that the public is burdened with expensive electricity tariff while the petition has been filed under Section 184(3).
