LAHORE: The Senior Minister of Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb recently discussed the air quality of Lahore, shedding light on its smog crisis.
While addressing the media, Marriyum Aurangzeb commented on Lahore’s history of smog including the escalation in the past years.
She disclosed that the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached hazardous levels in the districts of Lahore. She went on to call the smog in Lahore dangerous and even potentially lethal.
According to her, the index has risen to 450, while an index higher than 150 can be lethal. She also pointed out that Kasur, Sheikhupura and even Narowal are being engulfed by smog.
The Senior Minister also highlighted the link of smog with weather and its carcinogenic potential.
Also, in June, the Sindh government had issued a high-alert warning for the monsoon season, stressing the importance of preparedness across all departments. Provincial Minister for Rehabilitation, Makhdoom Mehboobuzmaan, instructed all departmental officers to remain vigilant and ready to handle any emergencies. He warned that any negligence would result in strict consequences, as he intended to conduct surprise inspections across the province.
Adding to the city’s challenges, the Air Quality Index (AQI) placed Karachi as the 16th most polluted city in the world and the 6th most polluted city in Pakistan. The alarming ranking underscored the pressing need for environmental measures alongside the seasonal preparations for monsoons.
