Donkey that inspired Shrek character passes away at 30
The donkey that inspired Eddie Murphy’s character in the Shrek franchise has passed away at the age of 30. The handler, Jenny Kiratli, confirmed the sad news, sharing that Perry, the donkey, died on January 2 after battling laminitis, a debilitating foot disease.
Jenny expressed her grief and recounted how Perry became the inspiration for the beloved animated character. She explained that Perry had been a cherished part of the Bol Park pasture in California for three decades.

Perry’s connection to Shrek began when one of the film’s animators, who lived near the park, noticed the donkey after his wife pointed him out. Knowing her husband was working on a film featuring a donkey, she encouraged him to observe Perry. The animator later brought his team to meet Perry, who was affectionately dubbed a “special donkey” by the crew.
The Barron Park Donkeys’ official Instagram account paid tribute, writing, “We are heartbroken to share that our beloved Perry passed away yesterday at the age of 30. He was a beloved member of our community, and we know many will feel his loss. Memorial plans will be announced soon.”
Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy hinted in 2024 that recording for Shrek 5 has commenced, promising fans another adventure featuring the iconic character.
