Bilawal Bhutto seeks UN role in resolving disputes with India

NEW YORK: A Pakistani delegation led by Chairman Pakistan People’s Party and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and presented Pakistan’s case against India.

During the meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari handed over a letter from the Prime Minister of Pakistan to Secretary-General Guterres.

Bilawal Bhutto presented a letter to the UN Secretary General on the behalf of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif. He also appreciated the Secretary-General’s consistent emphasis on restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy in addressing regional conflicts and global issues.

He briefed the UN Secretary-General on Pakistan’s position in the aftermath of the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam incident. He firmly rejected the baseless and premature accusations leveled against Pakistan by India, which were made without any credible investigation or evidence.

Bilawal Bhutto emphasized that India’s unilateral military actions including attacks on civilians, casualties, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the arbitrary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty  are extremely dangerous and pose a serious threat to regional stability.

He cautioned that India is attempting to establish a “new normal” based on unilateralism, the use of force, and impunity, warning that such a course of action risks triggering a major conflict in a nuclear-armed region.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the UN Secretary-General to play an active role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India. He particularly emphasized the urgent need to initiate comprehensive dialogue on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, highlighting its central importance to achieving lasting peace in South Asia.

The delegation also provided a detailed briefing on the humanitarian consequences of the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, India’s unjustified aggression, and the violations of the UN Charter and international law.

Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and reaffirmed the United Nations’ strong interest in promoting peace, restraint, and diplomacy in the region.

He assured the delegation that the United Nations will continue to fully support all efforts aimed at de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of disputes, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The Secretary-General reiterated that the UN remains fully engaged in promoting peace and stability in South Asia and will continue to support all initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and resolving conflicts in the region.
