Pakistan Medical Association (PMA)  released a strong statement condemning the high rates of workplace discrimination against employees with diabetes, following a concerning news report published ahead of World Diabetes Day (November 14).

The statement was prompted by findings from a recent International Diabetes Federation (IDF) study, which revealed that 68% of employees with diabetes in Pakistan report negative workplace experiences, the highest percentage among all participating countries.

PMA expressed grave concern over the findings. “The systematic bias documented in this study is unacceptable. Diabetes is a manageable chronic condition, yet the stigma and isolation faced by nearly seven out of ten Pakistani employees is appalling,” said the Secretary General.

“This is not just an issue of fairness; it’s a public health crisis that forces individuals to choose between their livelihood and their health. We must dismantle the barriers that prevent diabetic patients from managing their condition openly and productively in the workplace.”

The IDF research highlighted several critical issues: Over 58% of respondents reported considering quitting their jobs due to discrimination or stigma. Many employees are denied necessary time off for medical care, check-ups, or in emergencies. A startling number of individuals, including those with Type 1 diabetes, conceal their condition, fearing unfair treatment and career stagnation. Only one in twenty workers shared details of their diagnosis.

The PMA emphasizes that workplace environments must transition from sites of prejudice to pillars of support. Living with diabetes requires regular monitoring and management, and employers have a moral and legal obligation to provide inclusive support. Call to Action:

The PMA calls upon the Government of Pakistan, corporate leaders, human resources departments, and regulatory bodies to immediately implement the following measures: Mandate Inclusive Policies: Establish and enforce clear anti-discrimination policies protecting employees with chronic health conditions, including diabetes.

Ensure Reasonable Accommodations: Guarantee flexible work arrangements, accessible private spaces for insulin administration or blood sugar checks, and necessary time off for medical appointments. Launch Awareness Campaigns: Conduct mandatory workplace training to eradicate myths, reduce stigma, and foster a culture of understanding and support for all employees.

The PMA stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that every Pakistani living with diabetes can achieve their full potential without fear of prejudice.
