Doctor Strange And Casting Confusion

Marvel movies have been captivating audiences since the Iron Man franchise took off. They have nurtured an entire generation that has grown up watching these movies. Before the advent of the Marvel universe if you were a comic book or super hero fan your movie representation was few and far between. Mostly just within the realms of the odd Dark Knight movie or the many Spider Man’s. However, Marvel since then has had massive success projecting its entire universe in live action movie format. This has led to a very successful and lucrative movie franchise in Avengers. With characters that range from the Hulk to Hawkeye and expanding theres a character for everyone. One of the characters that really hit hard with fans as of 2016 has been Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Recently Disney has released the trailer for Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness. The trailer has run into some hot water which will be discussed below but also what you can look forward to in the movie.

New Cast:

Disney has been ambitious to say the least with its Marvel releases with each rendition of the franchise introducing more and more A list celebrities. Doctor Strange 2 is no different and probably the most out there casting yet. Rumors circulating at the moment have hinted at Tom Cruise, yes Tom Cruise, and John Krasinski to join the cast. Nay sayers of this theory will say that the trailer does not show either the aforementioned heart throbs. To them we say that the trailer does not show Rachel McAdams either, however she has been cast as Dr.Palmer. So it can be argued that Marvel has more up its sleeve and this lack of information is exactly what they want so they can hit you with an amazing A list surprise.

Bye Bye Rachel McAdams

As mentioned above there are quite a few trailer shots where you can not see Rachel McAdams, specifically there is one scene that has been shown over and over again where the gang is standing in front of the cosmic doorway. Now in some scenes you can clearly see McAdams, standing next to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez. However, in some scenes you cannot this leads to this fan speculation that in fact there is more than one Christine (Rachel McAdam’s character). The one standing next to everyone is not the same Christine everyone got to watch and adore in the original 2016 movie but in fact another one from a different multiverse, this is largely due to the very unique clothing she is wearing. Another theory is because the trailers with Christine in them predate the trailers with out her, that in fact the directors and producers decided to take the movie in a different direction and hence cut her out. This would not be the choice most fans are hoping for because she really did bring a lot of diversity and good acting to the original movie.

The Dream Team

You know what’s better than one over powered magic wielding superhero? 2 over powered magic wielding super heroes. That is exactly what you get to see in the trailer with Stephen Strange enlisting the help of a post WandaVision Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) to help traverse the multiverse. Scenes show some action with Wanda (Scarlet Witch) being trapped in one scene however, most scenes just sell how psychadelic and loopy the multiverse is. It will be very interesting to see the dynamic between Stephen and Strange shape up especially in absence of the Avengers. Even more interesting will be seeing them combining their powers it truly will be a sight for sore eyes.

Controversial Dr. Strange

Another important scene from the trailers that is catching a lot of airtime is a particular scene where America Chavez acknowledges her two moms. This scene has seen more controversy than any other Marvel decision in the past. It’s led to China outright banning the movie and Saudi Arabia contacting Disney to cut out the 12 second clip for the Saudi release. To which Disney said no. Regardless of where you stand on LGBTQ content, this ban seems a bit harsh for one line of dialogue that can be censored. Eitherway it seems as though Disney might just still try to work around this.

What can be said about the trailer is that it is completely amazing. The visuals, the acting, the everything. It really carries on the progression that each Marvel movie has had with a sequel being shoulders above it’s last iteration. It also seems like long term fans are in for a joy ride as not only do they get to have the Master of Mystic Arts enamouring them with just how smart he is, but also a return of a long time favorit. The movie really is shaping up to be an amazing one and should be on every Marvel Maniacs to watch list if only for the mystery of the new characters Disney has in store for us. Expect long lines at the cinema because you are not alone.
