World Bank to succor in making landfill site for Karachi

Wednesday 09th October, 2019

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah held meeting with an eight-member World Bank delegation led by their Global Director for Urban, Resilience and Land Practice Groups Dr Sameh Naquib Wahba Tadros.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has allocated $10 million for improving Sindh Solid Waste Management Authority (SSWMA) on recommendation of the World Bank.

CM Sindh said that the Sindh Solid Waste Management Authority has been established recently. It is a new organization and would take time to achieve expertise and there is a dire need to operate it on scientific manner, he said.

However, World Bank Global Director Dr Dameh said that in Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Program (KNIP) there was a provision for solid waste management.

He also agreed to allocate $10million loan for capacity building, technical expertise and construction of a new landfill site for SSWMA.

The chief minister said that he was keen to develop a modern and environment-friendly landfill site outside the megacity.

He added that instead of spending millions of rupees on garbage lifting he was planning to make the garbage as fund-generation work. “If we achieve this target then SSWMA will become a self-sufficient organization,” he said.

On the request of the chief minister the World Bank agreed to construct a landfill site over an area of 500 acres on the outskirt of the city for which Sindh government would provide land.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also issued warning for sealing those buildings and shops if found throwing debris and garbage on roads and streets across Karachi.
