Provincial Minister for Finance Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht has said, present situation of air pollution in Lahore is not the result of smog but smoke as according to the latest NASA report.

The real centers of smoke are certain places in India where crops’ residues are being burnt for disposal, he added

Change in air direction is resulting in the inclusion of additional quantity of smoke in the air of Lahore and if this situation remains constant then there are strong chances of smog in fog season.

In this regard, the Punjab government has started taking precautionary measures and factories causing air pollution, brick-kilns working on obsolete technology and smoke-emitting vehicles are being temporarily shut down.

Afterwards, gradual conversation of all these components to the latest technology and the use of clean oil and energy will be ensured.

He expressed these views while presiding over a review meeting of EPD department here today.

The minister informed, a monitoring committee comprising of different stakeholders has been constituted to control the smog.

This committee will ensure necessary steps so that the menace of environmental pollution could be controlled with concerted efforts and holistic reforms.

The minister directed the EPD department to prepare project cycles of ADP schemes and the latest system should be used for monitoring.

Identification of one yearly and three months target is essential for planning, he added.

EPD Minister Muhammad Rizwan and Industrial Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal also spoke on the occasion.
