Economic Coordination Committee

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday summoned the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet.

The Economic Coordination Committee is expected to discuss a proposal for importing wheat in order to avert a looming wheat shortage in the country.

According to a report, the government has decided to consider the proposal to save consumers from soaring wheat prices, even though sufficient stocks of the commodity are available.

The report claimed that the government will green-light an import of 0.2-0.3 million tons of wheat in the coming days.

The move will maintain minimum stocks of wheat at 0.2 million tons.

The elimination of 5 percent tax on cotton will also come under discussion during the meeting.

The proposal to convert Lahore Garment City’s loan into grant will also come under consideration.

The meeting will also review the technical grant of Rs90 million to the National Book Foundation.

The country is facing mind-boggling hike in wheat flour prices as rates soared in major cities of Pakistan.

The wheat flour rate in Karachi has soared to Rs70 per kilogram.

Nanbais in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa observe strike against shortage of flour and to increase price of naan and roti here on Monday.

Nanbais Association President said the sack of 85kg flour now sold at Rs.52,00 in the area.

We cannot sell the naan and roti in this regard, he said.

Furthermore, he demanded to fix price of naan and roti to 15 rupees in the province.

He said the strike will expand to other parts of the province, if their demands not fulfilled.

The rise in the price of wheat flour and its acute shortage in several cities has brought severe crisis for the general public.
