Sindh Government Spokesperson Murtaza Wahab and Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah held a press conference in response to corruption allegations by SAPM on Accountability Barrister Shahzad Akbar from the previous day.

Sindh government denied allegations by Akbar that it issued subsidies to largely benefit the sugar mills owned by the Omni Group. PPP leaders said that the report was released to protect the Prime Minister and his cabinet from their involvement in the sugar price hike.

Murtaza Wahab said “We did not approve any sugar subsidies in 2018, 2019 or 2020. It was last issued in December 2017, fixing the sugar wholesale price at Rs50.10 and retail price at Rs53 which was reduced to Rs51 in March 2018.” “The statistics speak for themselves. The province’s farmers and public benefited [from the subsidy] unlike the Centre that fixed the price at Rs80,”

Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said, “More than 84% of the sugar subsidy was given by Sindh government to sugar mills of Jahangir Tareen and Khusro Bakhtiyar and other people,”. “This subsidy was given because sugar mills had sugar in ample quantities hence they did not want to start the crushing season,”.

Yesterday Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar revealed that former prime minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi awarded a subsidy of Rs 20 Billion out of Rs 26 billion on sugar in the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League (N).

Shahzad Akbar said Omni Group was one of the biggest beneficiaries who got billions on account of subsidy in Sindh. In one year only, as heavy loss as Rs 300 Billion was injected to the government exchequer. Salman Shahbaz the son of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif was the main beneficiary of the subsidy given by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi who claims himself a genius.
