The federal government has made a new constitutional amendment under which Pakistanis who have dual nationality will be able to participate in the general elections.
As per sources, the federal cabinet in this regard has approved an amendment to Constitution’s Article 63(1)(c).
With this new amendment, the barrier for the dual nationals will be broken and they would be able to contest in the elections, however, if a person with dual nationality wins the election, he will have to renounce the foreign citizenship.
According to the proposed amendment, it will not be necessary to renounce dual citizenship in order to contest general elections. In the next few days, the draft of the amendment will be tabled in the National Assembly.
Earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had rejected a petition seeking removal of special assistants to the Prime Minister who has dual citizenship.
Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Athar Minallah had issued a written decision rejecting a petition seeking suspension and dismissal of the Prime Minister’s aides with dual citizenship.
