Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif said that he felt much helpless in jail when heard about his mother’s death.

“The world can see how I am spending my days and nights in prison. What can be more devastating than hearing about your mother’s death while you are behind bars?” Shahbaz said.

Shahbaz said that he was not allowed access to a physiotherapist in jail, nor was a heater installed in his cell despite the cold.

The PML-N leader, along with his son Hamza Shahbaz released from jail on a five-day parole for the funeral of Begum Shamim Akhtar, which took place on Saturday, November 28.

Both, father and son, had been arrested and imprisoned after being charged in a money-laundering case.

“The government is exacting revenge on me. But this too shall pass,” he said.

“Collective efforts, however, can improve the situation for which there is an urgent need for a national dialogue. We need to bring all political parties on the same page.”

Shahbaz added that the PTI has “poisoned” national politics and whenever dialogue is initiated, it ends with abuses hurled at the Opposition.

“Right now I have been released on parole. Get me out of prison, then I can tell you how to fix the country,” the Opposition leader added.

Earlier, PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz had claimed that she was fed ‘rat-contaminated food’ during her stay in Punjab’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Maryam had complained of the medication she was given in the prison, saying it was “not fit for use at all”.

“I was forced to take fungus-infected medicines in prison,” she claimed.

She had also alleged the installation of cameras in her jail cell.

The PML-N VP was informed of the death “two hours late due to suspension of phone services”, she had revealed on Twitter after she had apologized and abruptly left the PDM jalsa.

“My father and family kept trying to contact me but were unable to do so,” she had said, accusing the PTI-led government of being inconsiderate and inhumane.
