The eligibility of Chairman PEMRA Mirza Saleem Baig is in question after Lahore High Court sought a reply on the petition filed against his appointment.
According to the details, the petition filed in the court states that “Chairman PEMRA’s educational qualifications also do not match the newspaper advertisement, Saleem Baig holds an MA in Political Science whereas the advertisement that was issued for the Chairman’s appointment, required finance and law as the educational background.”
According to the petition, Mirza Saleem Baig was a bureaucrat and did not receive the “No Objection Certificate” before applying for the vacancy. The petitioner requested that the appointment of Chairman PEMRA Saleem Baig should be declared as contradictory to the decisions of the High Court and the Supreme Court. The petition also requested the court to remove Chairman PEMRA Mirza Saleem Baig from office.
The bench that conducted the hearing sought reply from parties named in the petition.
It is pertinent to mention here that on June 28, 2018, the Ministry of Information issued a notification regarding the appointment of Mirza Saleem Baig as chairman of PEMRA. According to the notification, the Ministry of information appointed Mirza Saleem Baig to the post for the next four years on a contract basis. The Ministry of information issued the notification after the Supreme Court orders in this regard. The SC order came as a three-member bench headed by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar. Chief Justice noted that the search committee had nominated Baig for the post of PEMRA chairman.
