Funds Embezzling: NAB files reference against ex-Ambassador
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed on Wednesday a corruption reference against a former ambassador for embezzling embassy funds.
According to the details, the anti-graft body filed the reference in an Islamabad accountability court.
As per the filed reference, the former ambassador to Bulgaria Babar Hashmi in alliance with former accountant Tufail Qazi embezzled Rs 19 million from 2016 to 2018. The funds were released for Pakistan’s embassy in Sofia. NAB conducted the investigation at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Media reports said that the accused used the embassy funds for personal use by paying bills of hotels and throwing parties. The embezzlement was detected when a new accountant took charge of the embassy in Sofia.
The court will conduct a hearing on the reference after its scrutiny by the registrar’s office.
Back in August 2020, Tufail Qazi was taken into custody by a National Accountability Bureau team in Islamabad.
He is accused of inflicting huge financial losses on the national kitty by misusing government funds for personal gains during his posting at the embassy from 2013 to 2018.
Director-General of National Accountability Bureau Rawalpindi also said all officers of the bureau have been handling cases purely on the basis of merit as NAB is pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against corrupt practices.
