Baldia Factory Fire

At least three workers of a thread factory were killed due to fire in Baldia Sector 5 area of Karachi on Wednesday.

According to the details, the fire quickly engulfed three floors of the factory while some of the workers were present in the factory when the fire broke out.

With the help of four fire brigade vehicles and a snorkel, fire was brought under control after six hours.

The firefighters broke the shutters of the factory and recovered three dead bodies. The dead bodies have been shifted to the hospital.

According to the rescue officials, the deceased have been identified as Muhammad Kazim, Fayyaz and Sher Ali.

The Chief Fire Officer said that there was only one way to go up to the building that caught fire. Due to lack of safety measures, it was difficult to put out the fire. The Officer said that the factory had Iron windows which were locked from inside, however; factories usually have ‘glass windows.’

Snorkels are used to extinguish high-rise building fires, said the Chief Fire Officer, but it was used to bring the blaze under control. He added.

It is worth mentioning here that 264 workers were burnt alive in a factory in Karachi’s Baldia Town on September 11, 2012.

The JIT report, made in June 2015, two and a half years after the incident, came to light five years later.

The report recommended that the FIR was filed based on” dishonesty” due to the internal and external pressure which turned the act of “terrorism”  into a normal fire incident. Therefore, the FIR filed earlier should be returned and a new FIR should be registered.

It was recommended to include names of Rehman Bhola, Hamad Siddiqui, Zubair Charia, four unidentified accomplices, Umar Hassan Qadri, Dr. Abdul Sattar, Ali Hassan Qadri, and Iqbal Adib Khanum in the new FIR.
