On Tuesday, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) has challenged the victory of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Yousaf Raza Gillani in the Senate elections in Islamabad High Court (IHC).

According to the details, PTI leader Ali Nawaz filed a plea against the success of Yousaf Raza Gillani in the high court.

The petition said that Ali Haider Gillani’s video emerged two days before the Senate elections. The petition stated that the leaked video is proof that he was involved in horse-trading.

The petition stated that the Election Commission is a constitutional body and it has a constitutional responsibility to conduct transparent elections.

Earlier today, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had heard PTI petition seeking disqualification of the former prime minister and newly-elected Senator Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani.

During the hearing on the matter of former premier’s son Ali Haider Gillani’s video scandal, PTI lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar, Parliamentary Leader for Railways Farrukh Habib and member of National Assembly (MNA) Kanwal Shauzab appeared before the commission and recorded their arguments.

Barrister Ali Zafar claimed that rigging was carried out during the Senate polls through money and party tickets. Evidence of rigging was found a day before the elections, he told.

It may be recalled that a joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement Yousaf Raza Gillani had defeated PTI’s Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in an upset victory against the government in today’s Senate election.

The contest between Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Yousaf Raza Gillani was being described as the most critical contest between the opposition and the government.

Yousaf Raza Gillani secured 169 votes while Abdul Hafeez Shaikh could only win 164 votes. A total of 7 votes were rejected by the ECP.
