A policeman was martyred and a passerby was injured in an explosion near Karkhano Market in Peshawar.

Police said in an initial statement that unidentified men hurled a grenade at a police mobile and fled during an operation against coronavirus SOPs.

However, CCPO Peshawar Abbas Ahsan, who visited the site to assess the damage, explained that the police mobile was on a routine patrol when it was targeted.

He said that 4 people were onboard the mobile phone when it was attacked.

He said the nature of the blast could not be ascertained at the moment, so it would be difficult to say at this time whether it was a grenade attack or some other device used in the blast.

He added that the blast took place inside a police vehicle.

According to the CCPO, the slain policeman was identified as Ibn Amin, the police team in charge.

An unidentified passerby was also injured in the incident and was taken to hospital, he said.

On the other hand, the spokesman of Hayatabad Medical Complex said that the injured citizen was discharged after medical aid.

He said that the body of the martyred policeman was also brought to the medical complex.

It may be recalled that in October 2020, at least eight people were killed and about 120 injured in an explosion at Jamia Zubairia Madrassa in Dir Colony, Peshawar.
