Newly-appointed Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab, while vowing to end the “politics of discrimination” during his tenure, said he was planning to solve the city’s problems.

Murtaza Wahab, who is also the spokesperson of the Sindh government, expressed these views while talking to the media after assuming the charge of Administrator Karachi.

“I am trying not to think about the past, I am thinking about the future and I will work without discrimination,” he said.

He said that the Sindh government would lead the agenda and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other local bodies would put it into practice.

The Karachi administrator said that he was ready to work with anyone, even representatives of the federal government, for the betterment of Karachi.

Asked about his plan to solve the city’s problems, he said he was not yet outlining his agenda as it was being worked on.

“I will first review the situation, after which I will prepare an action plan and give details,” he said.

“The city’s problems have not been solved for many years because there is no direction. We are trying to set that direction,” he said.

He also said that no institution can function without resources and also highlighted the need to focus on KMC’s tax collection for financial self-reliance.

“I have told KMC officials that no lasting solution to the city’s problems can be found when the institution is not made financially self-sufficient,” he said.

Murtaza Wahab said that KMC has served the city in the past and has played a role in its development, we will work with them.

Responding to a question on the issue of sanitation in the city, he said that it was the primary responsibility of the local bodies, especially the District Municipal Corporations (DMCs).

The administrator said that in 4 out of 6 districts of Karachi this responsibility is with Solid Waste Management while in 2 districts Korangi and Central District this work is done by DMCs and in the districts where Sindh Solid Waste Management Board is responsible. The situation is much better.

He said that the management of Central District and Korangi have contacted the Solid Waste Management Board and will start the work there by the end of this month after which you will see a significant difference.

Murtaza Wahab said that it would take time to solve the water problem of the city but the problem of sewerage could be solved soon and said that he would soon hold a meeting with the officials in this regard.
