President Appreciates Role Of Minorities In Social, Economic Development Of Country
President Dr Arif Alvi while appreciating the role of minorities in the social and economic development of the country said that minorities in Pakistan have all the political, economic and social rights under the constitution, the government protects their rights and works for their welfare.
In his message to the nation on the occasion of International Minorities Day, the President said that Pakistan celebrates “Minorities Day” every year on August 11 in recognition of services rendered to minorities in education, science, judiciary, civil services and defence.
He said that to make Pakistan a strong and prosperous country, it is necessary to promote the spirit of love, tolerance, brotherhood and unity.
Minorities have played a commendable role in the country’s social and economic development. “I am happy to say that minorities in Pakistan enjoy all the political, economic and social rights guaranteed under the Constitution of Pakistan,” he said.
The President said that our religion Islam also fully recognizes the rights of minorities and is a strong supporter of the protection of their rights adding that the Charter of Medina also guaranteed equal religious and political rights to all religious groups.
He said that the government of Pakistan has been making continuous efforts for the welfare of minorities.
Pakistan has set up a National Minorities Commission to oversee the practical implementation of the rights provided to minorities in the Constitution.
Similarly, to enable minorities to play their role in the economic and political development of the country, a 5% quota in government jobs, as well as separate seats in both the Houses of Parliament, were allotted to them.
In addition, steps are being taken to provide grants and financial support for the education and maintenance of places of worship for students and members of minority communities.
President Arif Alavi said that Pakistan is committed to ensuring the protection of the religious, social, political and economic rights of its minorities.
“I also appeal to the ulema and the media to educate the people about the rights of minorities and promote love, tolerance, brotherhood and unity among the people to make Pakistan a strong and prosperous country,” he said.
