PPP’s Sherry Rehman slams PTI over threats issued to ECP
LAHORE: PPP Senator Sherry Rehman on Friday slammed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government over the threats issued to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
“The PTI government’s comments and allegations on the ECP are completely disgraceful. A constitutional institution has refused to bow down to their demands so, they want to burn it down? Do they want to dispense with all democratic norms and get on with their model of one-party authoritarianism?” questioned the senator.
The PPP leader said that the PTI’s accusation of bribes and rigging on the ECP was “inappropriate behaviour”. She added that the government should rather the ECP’s 37 objections on the electronic voting machines.
“The government needs to realise that even one objection to the EVM can make the whole election controversial,” said PPP parliamentary leader in the Senate. She added that the ECP is not bound to hold elections at the government’s whims but is an “independent institute” that the PTI government cannot dictate.
“The ECP has already explained that EVMs cannot guarantee transparent and free elections as they can be easily tampered with. The government should explain how they are so sure about the machine’s transparency,” she added.
