KARACHI: The Orangi Town Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a suspect involved in various street crimes during an operation against street criminals, drug peddlers and fugitives to curb crime in the city.

According to the Karachi Police spokesperson, the accused named Saleem involved in various street crimes and drug trafficking has been arrested and the police also recovered illegal weapons, arms, ammunition from his possession.

The accused had earlier been arrested and jailed in a drug trafficking case from the Iqbal Market police station, the spokesperson added.

A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.

According to the data shared by police, more than 50,000 street crimes have been reported across Karachi during the first eight months of 2021.

Most of the street crime incidents involved motorcycle snatching, followed by mobile snatching and four-wheeler snatching incidents, stated the police.

During the first eight months of 2021, around 34,181 motorcycles, 14,578 mobile phones, and 1,268 four-wheeler vehicles were snatched.

Officials claimed that 54 people lost their lives while 458 people were injured in street crime incidents in the city.

In a meeting earlier this year, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was told that there was a decline of 30 per cent in street crimes during August.

Murad was informed that street crime observed a 30 per cent decline during 10 days from August 11. To which, the chief minister said he wanted an end to street crimes.
