KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken notice of an incident when a presiding officer (PO) was slapped during the recently-concluded local government (LG) elections in Tharparkar.
A video of the incident shows a man entering a polling stating and slapping the presiding officer (PO during the first phase of the by-polls held in the province. The incident reportedly occurred in village Majhi in Islamkot district of Tharparkar.
He has been identified as Ghulam Muhammad Junejo who is an official at the Sindh Health Ministry. He could be seen having a heated argument with presiding officer Dr Ghansham Das leading to an exchange of words.
Junejo was later caught on camera slapping the presiding officer. The video has gone viral on social media and has caused outrage amid incidents of violence and mismanagement that were reported from across the province during the polls.
The Pakistan Medical Association has demanded action against the health official. Eventually, the provincial election commission took notice of the incident and sought a report from the district presiding officer, district returning officer and district election commissioner.
ECP’s deputy director Sajjad Khattak has also directed the DRO Tharparkar and others to submit a report into the incident so that an action could be taken against the official involved in the incident.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had emerged in the first phase local bodies elections, marred by incidents of violence and mismanagement and accusations or rigging by rival political parties.
