LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Hamza Shehbaz has lost majority in the Punjab Assembly after the PML-N received a drubbing in the bypolls.

The provincial government has been turned into a minority after the PTI won 15 out of the 20 seats on the bypolls. The PML-N managed to win four seats while an independent candidate won one seat.

The election result has paved the way to bring a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Dost Muhammad Mazari who has defied party policies and expressed support for the PML-N.

With the addition of 15 members, the number of PTI lawmakers has reached 178. while the part also has the support of ten PML-Q members.

Before the by-polls, the PTI and PML-Q jointly had 173 seats (163 of PTI and 10 of PML-Q). With the additional seats, this strength has reached 188 whereas the simple majority stands at 186.

PML-N will now have 175 members in the Punjab Assembly due to the resignation of MPAs Faisal Niazi and Jalil Ahmad Sharqpuri. One independent MPA is likely be part of the new ruling coalition.

Estranged PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar has not expressed support for any party and is unlikely to vote in the election.

The result has also paved the way for Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi to replace Hamza Shahbaz Sharif as the new chief minister of the province in the coming days.

Almost all the turncoats who joined the PML-N and voted for Hamza Shahbaz Sharif lost to the PTI candidates.

The ruling coalition has the support of seven PPP lawmakers, three independents and one member of Pakistan Rah-e-Haq party.
