PML-N concedes defeat as PTI wins Punjab bypolls

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has won 15 seats of the Punjab Assembly in by-elections held in 20 constituencies of the province.

According to unofficial results issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) obtained four seats while one seat was won by an independent candidate.

As per details, the PTI candidates won the by-elections from PP-83 Khushab-2, PP-90 Bhakkar-2, PP-97 Faisalabad-1, PP-125 Jhang-2, PP-127 Jhang-4, PP-140 Sheikhupura-6, PP-158 Lahore-15, PP 167 Lahore-24, PP-170 Lahore 27, PP-202 Sahiwal-7, PP-217 Multan-7, PP-224 Lodhran-1, PP-272, Muzaffargarh-5, PP-282 Layyah-3, and PP-288 Dera Ghazi Khan-4.

PML-N candidates won four seats from constituencies PP-7 Rawalpindi-2, PP-168 Lahore-15, PP-237 Bahawalnagar-1 and PP-273 Muzaffargarh-6. An independent candidate won the seat from PP-228 Lodhran-5 constituency.

After the results were announced, the PML-N conceded defeat in the crucial by-elections. PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz took to Twitter and said that the defeat should be accepted with an open heart.

“The PML-N should accept the results of the by-polls with an open heart and concede to the decision of the masses,” Maryam wrote.

She added that winning and losing were part of politics, therefore, the party should now focus on its weaknesses, identify them, and then overcome them.  “God willing, everything will be fine,” she said.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb says Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has established a bright democratic tradition by ensuring free, fair and transparent election in a peaceful manner.

In a series of tweets, she said the party accepts the opinion of the people who are real decision makers under the Constitution.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said it should be acknowledged that the PML-N is a representative party of the most of people of Punjab. She said the PML-N will continue the journey of representing and serving the people with renewed determination and passion.
