ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the attack on senior journalist and analyst Ayaz Amir by unidentified assailants in Lahore.
In a statement on Twitter, the prime minister instructed Punjab Chief Minister to hold a high-level investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to justice
The prime minister expressed sympathy with Ayaz Amir and directed to ensure protection of journalists.
I strongly condemn the attack on senior journalist/analyst Ayaz Amir. Such attacks on media persons are totally unacceptable in a democratic society. On my directions, Punjab Chief Minister has ordered a high-level inquiry into the sad incident to bring perpetrators to justice.

President Dr Arif Alvi, while expressing concern over the attack on Ayaz Amir, has called for immediate arrest of the culprits.
In a statement, he said incidents of violence against journalists are contrary to democratic values and freedom of expression.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb has also strongly condemned the attack on Ayaz Amir and termed it an attack on freedom of press.
She said the government will fully investigate the incident and provide justice to Ayaz Amir. The Information Minister said reality cannot be changed by attacking the dissenting voices and critics.
Renowned and outspoken journalist Ayaz Mir was attacked by unknown assailants when he was going back from his office on Abbottabad Road in Lahore on late Friday night.
The senior journalist said around six attackers intercepted his vehicle and subjected him and his driver to torture, and ran away. They also stole his mobile phone and wallet.
Chairman PTI Imran Khan strongly condemned the incident and maintained that journalists, political workers and other innocent people were being implicated in false cases.
He further said that when the government loses moral authority, they would adopt the policy of torture and hooliganism.
Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Sharif, provincial Home Minister Ata Tarar also condemned the incident and also directed the IG Punjab to conduct an enquiry into the matter and submit the report immediately. IG Punjab also issued directives to Lahore CCPO to arrest the culprits at once.
It is pertinent to mention that Ayaz Mir attended a seminar at the invitation of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. Ayaz criticised the regime change plot and characters who played vital roles in the conspiracy.
