KARACHI: An accountability court on Wednesday heard a reference against PML-N stalwart and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for illegal appointments in the Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

Ex-PM Abbasi and other accused appeared in court. The lawyer of the co-accused Sheikh Imran-ul-Haq sought time to give arguments. He said the accountability court can hear the reference after the NAB Amendment. The court adjourned hearing till September 12.

Speaking to media, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi expressed his displeasure over the delay in hearing the reference and hoped the new NAB chairman will provide justice.

“This is the fourth year of the case. NAB cannot present evidence or witnesses. We hope that the new chairman will end the injustice. If there is evidence, the case shall be prosecuted and punished,” he said.

He said new NAB Chairman is responsible for reviewing cases of those whose lives have been paralyzed and providing them relief. He claimed that thousands of people are in jail in false cases by the anti-graft watchdog.

Abbasi said the former NAB chairman should declare his assets so that the public should know the reality of the person making false cases.

“If you want the accountability of Rs1100 billion, then also take accountability of Rs150 crores. We are not asking for any relief,” he said, taking a jibe at the PTI for the verdict in the prohibited funding case. “Who will hold accountable on receiving funds from Indians and Israelis.”

Regarding the recent hike in petrol prices, he said there is a system and prices of petroleum products are determine by OGRA keeping in view the global trends.

He said neither the government nor Finance Minister Miftah Ismail decides on petrol prices. He said the government wants to regulate prices so the market can decide itself.

He said the government is producing cheaper electricity as much as it can while there has been no increase in power production in four years. He said the negligence by the previous government will have an effect for some time.

He said there is no room for threats in politics today. He said the court decided political tension in Punjab has an effect on the economy. He slammed the decision to summon Rana Sanaullah to appear before a JIT.
