DADU: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Saturday visited far-flung areas of Dadu district in Sindh to review the flood situation.

According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army chief spent time with flood-affected people in relief and medical camps and directed the formation for providing 5,000 tents to flood affected people of Dadu and surrounding areas, the

The COAS also interacted with troops busy in rescue and relief activities. Later, the COAS flown for aerial reconnaissance of flood-affected areas of Dadu, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Johi, Mehar and Manchar Lake.

Speaking to media after his visit, General Bajwa said he said visited several floods affected areas across the country including Rajanpur, Uthal, Naseerabad, Larkana, Shahdadkot, Sukkur and has now come to Dadu which is the worst-hit area.

He said Hamal Lake and Manchhar Lake have a distance of 100 kilometres but have now been merged together. He said rescue and relief operations are still ongoing in the area even though they have been completed in the rest of the country.

He said more than a million people could be affected in Dadu city and the army is still continuing the first phase of relief and rescue operations. He appreciates the role of the Deputy Commissioner in strengthening embankments to save the city from floods.

He said the international community is helping us but the people of Pakistan should donate generously to their countrymen. “Our brothers are in trouble, we need to help them rather than relying solely on foreign aid,” the army chief said.

He said the west bank of the River Indus faced record rain this year which the country was not prepared for. He said they are working on a strategy to protect the west bank of the river and will decide on building dams and other measures in cooperation with the government.

He said they are considered building pre-fabricated village for the flood victims as such houses are cost-effective and durable. He said there is a threat of malaria, dengue, and water-borne diseases in Dadu and other districts and the army is working to provide medical assistance.

He said the rehabilitation of flood victims may take a long time and they will work with the civil administration to improve the lives of flood victims.
