Cabinet approves retirement of Gen Faiz Hameed, Gen Azhar Abbas

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved the early retirement of Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed and Lieutenant General Azhar Abbas.

The federal capital approved the request for early retirement of the two generals through a circulation summary. Consequently, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed will retire effectively from December 10, while the retirement of Lt Gen Azhar Abbas will stand retired with immediate effect.

Both senior generals had sought early retirement following the appointment of new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir.

Lt Gen Faiz Hameed and Lt Gen Azhar Abbas were among the six senior-most generals whose names were considered for the top military posts of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

The military generals were among the candidates for the top military position in a summary sent by the General Headquarters to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval.

The prime minister picked Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir Shah as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

General Asim Munir took over the command as the 17th Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army from General Qamar Javed Bajwa on November 29.

Lt Gen Faiz Hameed was serving as Corps Commander Bahawalpur before his retirement. He was commissioned in the Baloch Regiment and served as the 24th Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and as GOC 16th Infantry Division Pano Aqil.

Lt Gen Azhar Abbas was serving as 35th Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Pakistan Army. He was commissioned in the 41st Battalion of Baloch Regiment.

He served as Commandant School of Infantry and Tactics in Quetta, headed a division in Murree, worked as Brigadier in the Operations Directorate, and was also a Private Secretary to the former Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.
